Overview

Calorie intake and consumption refer to the amount of food energy, measured in calories (kilocalories), that a person obtains from the foods and beverages they eat and drink. Energy intake is balanced against energy expenditure from basal metabolism, physical activity, and other processes, and this balance is a primary determinant of body weight and a key factor in nutritional status and metabolic health. Calorie intake is central to nutrition science and public health because chronic imbalance, whether excess or deficiency, contributes to conditions such as obesity, undernutrition, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Understanding intake involves assessing dietary patterns, energy density, food choices, and the social, economic, and behavioral factors that shape eating. Research published in this field examines dietary intake and assessment methods, including novel approaches such as smartphone-based dietary tracking, and the nutritional status of diverse populations, from adolescents to older adults. Reported studies also address strategies for weight management and obesity reversal, the role of dietary regimens and food energy density in successful weight loss and maintenance, the use of non-caloric sweeteners in people with type 2 diabetes, and the interplay between diet, the gut microbiota, and broader health outcomes. Together these strands connect energy intake to the prevention and management of diet-related disease.
