Neonatal Brain Injury
Neonatal brain injury is a form of injury that occurs during or shortly after birth, which may cause long-term physical or cognitive disabilities, or even death. It is a very serious health issue and is estimated that it occurs in around 1 in every 1000 births. It is caused by a variety of factors such as birth complications, infection, oxygen deprivation or trauma, and can lead to a range of outcomes including death, cerebral palsy, physical disability, developmental delay, and learning difficulties. Treatment and interventions vary depending on the severity and type of injury, and may involve long-term management by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. Early detection and diagnosis are important for effective management of neonatal brain injury, and research is ongoing to explore treatments and interventions that may help improve outcomes for affected children.
