Myelin

Myelin is a specialized type of insulation that surrounds nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is composed of a fatty layer, known as white matter, that provides electrical insulation and improves the speed at which signals are transmitted between neurons. Myelin serves to aid in communication between neurons and is essential for normal nervous system function. Without myelin, signals would not be properly transmitted leading to movement and cognitive issues. Myelin has also been found to play a role in the formation of memories and learning. Myelin is essential for normal cognitive and motor function, and any damage or disruption of its formation can lead to serious neurological disorders.
