Demyelination
Demyelination is the process of damage to the fatty myelin sheaths that insulate and protect nerves in the central and peripheral nervous systems. When the myelin sheath is damaged, the transmission of nerve signals is slowed or prevented. Demyelination can lead to a wide range of neurological symptoms, from tingling sensations in the extremities to paralysis. It can occur as a result of autoimmune disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, or from illness, malnutrition, or trauma. Demyelination is a critical component of neurological disorders, and its potential causes and treatments are currently being explored. Advanced treatments include plasmapheresis and stem cell therapy to help regenerate myelin.
