Overview
Physiology is the scientific study of the functions and mechanisms of living organisms and their parts, examining how cells, tissues, organs, and systems operate and interact to sustain life. It spans levels from molecular and cellular processes to integrated organ-system function, and it provides the foundation for understanding health, disease, and the body's responses to challenge. Research in this area examines the physiology of specific organ systems and states, including adipose-tissue physiology and its relevance to obesity, single-ventricle physiology and its impact on infant nutritional status, and cardiac physiology and pathophysiology across reproductive and post-menopausal life. Studies also address exercise and muscular physiology, including modes of muscular contraction and recovery methods in sport, the influence of dose on bodily physiology, and the biochemical basis of practices such as controlled breathing. The relationship between physiological knowledge and clinical study, as well as the physiology underlying nutrition and the microbiota, is further explored. The significance of physiology lies in its role as the basis of medicine and the life sciences, explaining how normal function is maintained and how its disruption produces disease. Knowledge of physiology underpins the interpretation of clinical findings, the design of treatments, and the promotion of health through exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle. A rigorous understanding of bodily function is essential to both basic biological science and applied medical practice.
