Tetrahymena Thermophila
Tetrahymena thermophila is a microscopic, single-celled organism belonging to the ciliate protozoa group. It grows rapidly and is widely used as a model organism in both basic and applied research. It is found in a variety of freshwater, brackish and marine environments, where it feeds on yeasts, bacteria and other microorganisms. Its significance lies in being a useful tool in the fields of cell biology, genetics and developmental biology, due to its simple and well-characterized genetics. Its genome has been sequenced and it can be manipulated genetically using genetic engineering techniques. It is also widely used in the study of evolutionary processes, cellular signaling and metabolic processes. Furthermore, its use in biotechnology has been explored for the production of useful compounds, such as pharmaceuticals and other novel products.
