Overview

Ecology is the scientific study of the relationships between living organisms and their environment, including the interactions among organisms and the distribution, abundance, and dynamics of populations, communities, and ecosystems. It examines how energy flows and nutrients cycle through natural systems, how species respond to physical and biological factors, and how ecological processes shape biodiversity and the functioning of the biosphere. The discipline spans levels from individual organisms to the global environment and informs the management and conservation of natural resources. Research relevant to this area addresses the ecology of aquatic and terrestrial systems and the influences acting on them: the use of freshwater organisms as bioindicators of pollution, the effects of water replenishment on lake and wetland quality, and the monitoring of insect species richness and abundance across habitats. Allied work examines wildlife distribution, migration, and conservation, the ecology of disease vectors such as mosquitoes, agro-ecological requirements of crops, and the application of remote sensing to environmental management. Population-genetic perspectives on evolution and extinction also feature. Across these strands, scholarship in ecology seeks to explain how organisms interact with one another and their surroundings, how environmental change alters these relationships, and how ecological understanding can guide conservation, resource management, and the protection of ecosystem health.
