Overview

Agriculture is the cultivation of crops and the husbandry of animals to produce food, fibre, and other materials, integrating agronomy, soil science, plant and animal breeding, and the management of land and water. Modern practice ranges from smallholder and family farming to precision agriculture, in which spatial data, sensors, and controlled inputs are used to match fertiliser, water, and crop protection to field variability and so raise yields and resource-use efficiency. Sustainable agriculture seeks to maintain productivity while conserving soil health, retaining crop residues, and reducing environmental harm, and it is shaped by socioeconomic forces including labour supply, migration, and remittances. Research themes in this area include the implementation of precision agriculture and the fertiliser response governing foodgrain production, permaculture and residue retention for sustainability in semi-arid and tropical systems, the relationship between migration, remittances, and agricultural employment, and emerging technologies such as remotely controlled aerial spraying and the biotechnological application of cyanobacteria. Studies also consider soil testing for fertiliser recommendation and yield advances achieved through site-specific management. Together these address the central problem of producing more food on finite land while sustaining the resource base. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research spanning crop production, soil and fertility management, agricultural technology, and the economics of farming systems.
