Overview

Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are common illnesses caused by viruses and bacteria that affect the airways and lungs. RTIs can be mild or severe, and include colds, influenza, pneumonia, and croup, among others. Treatment of RTIs usually involves medications to relieve symptoms, reduce the severity of the infection, and prevent complications. Depending on the type of infection, treatment options include antibiotics, antivirals, corticosteroids, and other medications. In some cases, lifestyle changes and supportive care may also be advised. Early and appropriate treatment of RTIs is essential to reduce their severity and prevent serious complications.
