Leprosy

Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium, Mycobacterium leprae. It is a chronic, disfiguring and potentially disabling condition that primarily affects the skin, peripheral nerves and mucous membranes. Although there is no cure for leprosy, it is treatable and prevention strategies, such as early diagnosis, have helped to reduce its prevalence. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent the skin and nerve damage that can lead to disability. Leprosy can also have a major impact on people's lives, due to associated stigma and discrimination.
