Overview

Infectious diseases of the nervous system, sometimes referred to as neuroinfectious diseases, are illnesses caused by the infection of the nervous system by a virus, bacterium, fungi, or parasite. They can affect any part of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Symptoms may include headache, fever, confusion, impaired movement and sensation, seizures, and coma. Treatment usually involves a combination of medication and supportive care, which may include rest and fluids, oxygen, and nutritional support. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential in order to reduce the risk of serious complications and long-term disability.
