Overview

Dysentery is an infectious and sometimes life-threatening illness caused by a number of different bacteria, viruses and parasites. The most common symptoms of dysentery include bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. Treatment usually consists of antibiotics and rehydration to replace lost fluids. Dysentery is most commonly found in developing countries, but can also occur in developed countries, especially among populations with limited access to clean water and sanitation. Early diagnosis and treatment of dysentery is essential in order to reduce the severity of the illness and to prevent its spread.
