Overview

STDs and STIs are a major risk factor for acquiring HIV/AIDS. Practicing safe sex, using condoms, and regularly testing for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are the best ways to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS. In addition to reducing risk, routine testing can identify and treat any STDs or STIs to prevent their spread. Regular testing, early diagnosis, and proper treatment can minimize long-term health complications. Furthermore, for those already infected with HIV, treatment, care and support greatly reduce the chances of transmitting HIV to others. Ultimately, as a result of safer sex practices, regular testing and prompt treatment, the number of new HIV/AIDS diagnoses and transmissions can be greatly reduced.
