Overview

Solid waste management is the systematic control of the generation, storage, collection, transport, processing, treatment, and disposal of solid waste in a manner that protects public health and the environment. It addresses municipal, commercial, industrial, and hazardous waste streams through strategies that include source reduction, recycling and resource recovery, composting and biological treatment, controlled landfilling, and energy recovery. Effective management reduces contamination of air, soil, and water, limits vector-borne disease and pollution, and supports sustainable resource use, while poor disposal practices generate leachate, greenhouse and toxic gases, and heavy-metal contamination. The research themes reflected here include sustainable municipal solid waste management, the characterization of commercial solid waste streams, and the ecotoxicological assessment of leachate from waste dumpsites. Environmental-impact studies examine the disposal of polyethylene bags, the distribution and risk of lead, cadmium, and chromium in dumpsite soils, and hydrogen sulphide emissions around dumpsites, while resource-recovery work addresses biogas production from cattle dung and food waste and cellulase production from lignocellulosic waste.
