Overview
Petroleum is a naturally occurring liquid mixture of hydrocarbons, together with smaller amounts of sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen, and trace metal compounds, formed from the burial and thermal maturation of organic matter in sedimentary rock over geological time. As a fossil fuel of high energy density, it is recovered from subsurface reservoirs and refined by fractional distillation and conversion processes into fuels, lubricants, and petrochemical feedstocks. Its composition spans alkanes, cycloalkanes, and aromatic hydrocarbons of varying molecular weight, and its extraction, processing, and use carry significant environmental consequences. The study of petroleum and hydrocarbons addresses reservoir behaviour, recovery efficiency, fuel chemistry, and the development of alternatives and remediation strategies. The research themes connected here include the application of acrylate polymers in enhanced oil recovery and the production of biodiesel through base-catalysed transesterification of residual oils using waste-clay catalysts, reflecting interest in improving hydrocarbon recovery and in renewable substitutes for petroleum fuels. Other associated work considers the environmental impact of petroleum operations on surface water and broader energy, water, and food relationships. Across these topics, recovery technology, fuel and energy chemistry, and environmental impact recur. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies, technical reports, and reviews addressing petroleum and hydrocarbon science, recovery and processing, alternative fuels, and the environmental dimensions of hydrocarbon use.
