Overview
Energy sources are the natural substances, materials, and physical phenomena from which usable energy and power are extracted, conventionally divided into non-renewable stocks such as coal, petroleum, natural gas, and other hydrocarbons, and renewable flows including solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and biomass. Hydrocarbon fuels release chemical energy through combustion and remain central to electricity generation and transport, while renewable conversion relies on photovoltaics, thermal collectors, and electrochemical pathways. Characterizing any source involves energy density, conversion efficiency, intermittency, storage requirements, and lifecycle emissions, and modern energy systems increasingly couple multiple carriers within hybrid and distributed architectures. Research in this area spans photovoltaic interfacing through DC-DC boost conversion, hydrogen production by alkaline water electrolysis, gas-turbine operation and simulation, concentrated solar radiation and its interaction with absorber materials, two-stage thermostatic solar water heating for process pre-heating, alternative residential power systems, and the broader water-energy-food nexus. Energy efficiency in commercial buildings represents a complementary demand-side strategy, reducing primary energy draw across the same supply mix. The journal publishes peer-reviewed work examining the generation, conversion, optimization, and integration of these conventional and emerging energy sources, including mathematical modeling, experimental design optimization, and applied engineering analyses of power systems and thermal processes.
