Cardiovascular System Anatomy
The cardiovascular system is a network of organs and vessels which pumps and transports blood throughout the body. It consists of the heart, blood vessels, and the circulatory system, which are essential for the maintenance of healthy and proper functioning of the human body. The heart pumps oxygenated blood from the lungs to the rest of the body, while the arteries, veins and capillaries deliver oxygen and nutrients to organs and tissues. The cardiovascular system is of immense importance as it transports oxygen, nutrients and other bodily substances to every cell in the body. Its main purpose is to remove harmful waste and to supply oxygen, hormones and other substances to organ systems. It also helps to regulate blood pressure and temperature, deliver oxygen and nutrients to the cells and keeps the body in balance. Proper functioning of the cardiovascular system is integral for the overall health of a person and its dysfunction may result in various diseases.
