Arms
pach Formation The Armspach Formation is a sedimentary rock unit, mainly composed of shale and limestone, that is of Paleozoic age (~310 million years old) and found in the Upper Rhine Plain region of south-western Germany. It is of great significance to the area, being the most significant aquifer for agricultural, industrial and domestic water supply in the region, providing a large volume of natural spring water which is of excellent quality. It has also been utilised as a potential alternative energy resource by the local municipalities, having performed well in enhanced geothermal systems and its deposits of oil, gas and coal have been identified as potentially useful sources of energy. Its use in geological research has also been prominent, with Armspach formations providing insights into the evolution of sedimentation processes in the region and its relevance to the European geological framework.
