Overview

Anatomical imaging refers to the use of medical imaging technologies to visualize and study the structure of the human body, including bones, soft tissues, organs, and vascular systems. Research published in the International Journal of Human Anatomy demonstrates applications of anatomical imaging across diverse clinical and comparative contexts. Studies have employed cone beam computed tomography to examine mandibular neurovascular canals, comparing modern human anatomy with that of great apes and proposing new classification systems for bifurcated mandibular neural canals. This work contributes to understanding anatomical variation with implications for dental and maxillofacial procedures. Additional research has utilized imaging to clarify anatomical structures relevant to clinical interventions, such as identifying safe approaches for pericardiocentesis procedures. Positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography has been applied to diagnose complex pathologies including rare gastric carcinomas. These investigations underscore the essential role of anatomical imaging in bridging foundational anatomical knowledge with practical medical and surgical applications, enabling clinicians to navigate individual anatomical variations safely and effectively while advancing comparative and clinical anatomy as scientific disciplines.
