Coronary Artery Disease
(CAD) Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is a serious condition and a major cause of death worldwide. It occurs when the coronary arteries, which supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart, become blocked due to fatty buildup on the artery walls (atherosclerosis). If not treated, CAD can lead to chest pain, heart attack, heart failure, cardiac arrest and sudden death. Risk factors for CAD include smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, and a family history of CAD. Treatment includes lifestyle changes, medications and surgery. Prevention includes maintaining healthy habits such as eating a heart-healthy diet, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and controlling cholesterol and blood pressure. Knowing the signs and symptoms of CAD and taking preventive action is key to protecting your heart health.
