Overview

Nutrition is the science of how organisms obtain and use food and its constituent nutrients for growth, energy, tissue maintenance, and the regulation of physiological processes. It studies macronutrients and micronutrients, dietary patterns, and the relationships between diet, health, and disease across the life course. Adequate nutrition is essential for normal development and immune function, while imbalance contributes to undernutrition, micronutrient deficiency, overweight, and diet-related chronic disease. The field spans nutritional status assessment, dietary intervention, food choice and education, and clinical nutrition in patients with specific needs. Research in this area examines nutrition services for pregnant women, vegetarian and culturally tailored diets, nutrition education in schoolchildren and adolescents, the link between nutrition and cardio-metabolic risk, epigenetic effects of diet, feeding algorithms for children undergoing stem cell transplantation, clinical nutrition following oesophagectomy, and the prevalence and determinants of undernutrition in children. A recurring theme is the connection between maternal and child nutrition, knowledge and behaviour, and long-term health outcomes, alongside the move toward individualized dietary approaches. Effective nutrition combines balanced intake with education, equitable food access, and clinical support for vulnerable groups. Because diet is a powerful and modifiable determinant of health, nutrition is central to preventing disease, supporting recovery, and promoting wellbeing in individuals and populations.
