Overview
Mental disorders are clinically significant disturbances in cognition, emotional regulation, or behavior that reflect dysfunction in the psychological, biological, or developmental processes underlying mental functioning, and are typically associated with distress or impairment in personal, social, and occupational domains. They encompass a broad spectrum, including depressive and anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and conditions arising in specific populations and life stages. Epidemiological study quantifies the prevalence of psychological distress across urban and rural settings and examines environmental and social determinants, such as noise exposure and socioeconomic and sociodemographic factors, in shaping depression at the population level. Research also addresses the psychological burden of major events and illnesses, including the mental health consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the comorbidity of trauma-related disorders with chronic disease such as cancer. Analytic approaches range from symptom-network methods that map the structure and activating symptoms of depression to investigations of emotional repression, loneliness, and sleep-related behaviors as correlates of well-being. Treatment and prevention span psychotherapeutic interventions, community-based mentoring and coaching for children, and biological and neurochemical lines of inquiry. The field integrates clinical, social, and biological perspectives to understand causation, improve diagnosis, and reduce the substantial individual and societal impact of mental illness.
