Overview
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistently elevated blood glucose resulting from impaired insulin secretion, impaired insulin action, or both. In type 1 diabetes, autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells causes absolute insulin deficiency, while type 2 diabetes, the most common form, arises from insulin resistance combined with relative insulin insufficiency and is strongly linked to obesity, diet, and inactivity. Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy and raises risk for both mother and child. Sustained hyperglycaemia damages blood vessels and nerves, producing complications such as cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, and increased susceptibility to sleep-disordered breathing. Research in this field examines the influence of nutrients and dietary agents on glycaemic control, trends in childhood and adolescent diabetes, gestational diabetes risk factors, vitamin D status, the diabetes-depression link, coronary calcification and cardiovascular risk, obstructive sleep apnoea, and the use of predictive modelling and artificial intelligence to anticipate adverse outcomes. Management requires lifelong attention through dietary modification, physical activity, glucose monitoring, and pharmacological therapy, supported by family and community involvement. Because diabetes is a major and rising contributor to global disease burden and premature death, understanding its mechanisms, risk factors, and complications is essential for prevention, early detection, and individualized long-term care.
