Overview
Global health policy is the body of strategies, frameworks, and decisions that governments, international agencies, and other actors develop to address health problems that cross national borders or affect populations worldwide. It seeks to improve population health, strengthen health systems, and advance health equity by guiding priorities such as disease prevention, immunization, financing, workforce support, and access to care. Because health determinants and threats increasingly transcend individual countries, global health policy emphasizes coordination, evidence-informed decision-making, and attention to the social, economic, and political contexts that shape outcomes. Research relevant to the field examines how public financing, economic growth, and governance factors such as corruption influence the performance of health interventions including immunization, and how primary health-care systems serve populations with chronic and non-communicable conditions. It also addresses the well-being of health workers, gender and social dimensions of health, and the quality of services delivered in varied settings, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Methodologically, global health policy draws on epidemiology, health economics, qualitative inquiry, and implementation science to evaluate what works and for whom. Its sub-areas include health-systems strengthening, health financing, non-communicable disease policy, maternal and population health, and equity. Collectively, these inform policies that aim to deliver effective, fair, and sustainable health improvements across diverse national contexts.
