Oxidative Stress
Oxidative stress is a process that describes when the body has an imbalance between the production of free radicals, molecules that contain oxygen, and the ability to detoxify and neutralize them. It is a condition that results when the body’s antioxidant enzymes cannot neutralize the energy produced by the breakdown of molecules in the body. Oxidative stress has been linked to an increased risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and other age-related conditions. It is thought to play an important role in the ageing process, and may be a cause of accelerated ageing. Oxidative stress can be countered through maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and reducing stress levels. Antioxidant supplements are also available as a means of reducing the damaging effects of oxidative stress.
