Overview

Chronic illness is a medical condition that persists over a long period of time, usually more than three months. It can cause physical, mental, and/or emotional distress, can lead to disability and decreased quality of life. Chronic illnesses are often linked to lifestyle choices, genetic predisposition and environmental factors, including exposure to pollutants. Treatment options depend on the type of illness, but can include medications, lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychotherapy. Improved management of chronic illnesses can help to improve health outcomes, reduce the need for costly treatments, and improve quality of life.
