Overview

Insect development is the process by which an insect grows and matures from an egg to adulthood. Insect development is important because it’s a key part of the insect’s life cycle, and is essential for sustaining populations of insects and their ecological roles in the environment. Insect development includes metamorphosis, in which the insect changes its form from a highly specialized egg stage to larva, pupa, and finally adult. This process of development is usually accompanied by changes in diet, behavior, and appearance. Insects are extremely important in the global food system, as they are essential pollinators and predators of plant pests. Therefore, understanding the development of insects is important for the health of ecosystems and agricultural production.
