Eating Disorder
Eating disorders are serious mental health illnesses that involve extreme disturbances in an individual's eating behaviors. They are characterized by an obsessive attitude toward food and body weight, and may involve eating too little or too much, or an extreme preoccupation with body weight and shape. Eating disorders can cause physical and psychological harm and can lead to serious complications, including death. Eating disorders are treatable and people who seek help can and do recover. While the exact cause of eating disorders is unknown, people who suffer from them often have feelings of low self-esteem, fear of gaining weight, perfectionism, and negative body image. Eating disorder treatment typically includes counseling, nutritional therapy, and psychosocial support. With proper treatment, people with eating disorders can improve their mental and physical health and, in many cases, are able to lead full and productive lives.
