Overview
Public health is the science and practice of protecting and improving the health of populations through organised efforts to prevent disease, prolong life, and promote wellbeing. It addresses health at the level of communities and populations rather than individual patients, drawing on epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, environmental and behavioural sciences, and health-systems management to identify health needs, monitor disease, and design and evaluate interventions. In the response to coronavirus disease, public health encompasses surveillance and case detection, transmission control through non-pharmaceutical interventions and vaccination, risk communication, and the mitigation of the pandemic's wider social and economic effects, while attending to inequities across regions and vulnerable groups. Core functions include disease surveillance, prevention and control, health promotion and education, and the strengthening of health services and data quality. Recurring research themes include knowledge and socio-demographic determinants of risk and exposure, mental health during the pandemic, infectious-disease emergence, climate and environmental influences on health, and the organisation and quality of health services. Research published in this area examines population-level determinants of health, the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable disease, and the public-health dimensions of the pandemic, reflecting the journal's coverage of the societal response to COVID-19.
