Overview

Beta coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause respiratory infections in humans and animals. These viruses are enveloped RNA viruses belonging to the family Coronaviridae, which also includes the Alpha, Gamma, and Delta coronaviruses. Beta coronaviruses are the most common cause of mild to severe respiratory illnesses, including the current outbreak of COVID-19. There are seven known types of beta coronaviruses, including HCoV-OC43, HCoV-HKU1, MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), HCoV-NL63 and HCoV-229E, out of which SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) is currently causing a global pandemic. The symptoms of beta coronavirus infections can vary from mild to severe, such as flu-like symptoms, runny nose, sore throat, cough, and fever. In some cases, these viruses can cause severe respiratory infections including pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and even death. The transmission of beta coronaviruses happens through respiratory droplets, close contact with an infected person, and surface contamination. The best way to prevent the spread of beta coronaviruses is by practicing good hygiene, such as wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing, washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoiding touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands, and staying home if feeling ill. In conclusion, Beta coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause respiratory infections ranging from mild to severe. With the emergence of COVID-19, it is essential to understand how the virus spreads and take measures to prevent its transmission through good hygiene and social distancing.
