Overview
Traditional medicine refers to the body of knowledge, skills, and practices grounded in the theories, beliefs, and experiences of different cultures that are used to maintain health and to prevent, diagnose, and treat illness. It encompasses established systems such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine as well as regional herbal and folk practices, and it relies heavily on medicinal plants, mineral preparations, and physical and dietary interventions. A central strand of contemporary research is the scientific characterization of medicinal plants and their traditional uses, including the extraction and analysis of phytochemicals, the measurement of antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, and the evaluation of plant-derived compounds in experimental models. Network pharmacology and bioactivity screening are increasingly applied to predict molecular targets of natural products and to rationalize observed effects. The field also documents patterns of use, such as self-medication during pregnancy and preference for herbal practitioners, which carry implications for safety and public health. Work here bridges ethnobotany, natural product chemistry, and pharmacology, aiming to validate efficacy, identify active constituents, standardize preparations, and clarify mechanisms so that traditional remedies can be assessed against modern evidentiary standards and, where warranted, integrated responsibly with conventional care.
