Organisms are essential for the functioning of the planet’s complex web of life. They form the base of most food webs, participate in nutrient cycling, regulate the climate, and provide much of the oxygen that is needed for life. In addition, organisms are essential for the production of medicines, fuels, and other materials used by humans. Understanding organisms and their interactions is essential to maintaining the health of our planet and its inhabitants.
