Overview
Opiates are a class of drugs derived from the poppy plant, and include narcotics like heroin, codeine, morphine and methadone. They are powerful pain relievers, but also produce strong feelings of euphoria and relaxation. Opiates are widely prescribed for medical use, but can have serious side effects and are highly addictive. Overdose can be deadly, and long-term use can lead to physical and psychological dependence. Treatment for addiction may include medication, counseling and support groups.
