Junctional Complexes

Junctional complexes are multi-protein structures composed of transmembrane proteins, which link adjacent cells together to form a functional and structural unit known as a ‘junction’. These complexes physically connect cells and enable the movement of ions, lipids, and other signaling molecules across the system. Junctional complexes are important for cell-to-cell communication and help coordinate cellular processes. They are also important for tissue development, wound healing, and immune defense. In addition, junctional complexes help to establish and maintain tissue integrity and function. These structures are essential for the normal functioning of a variety of cell types and tissues.
