Desmosomes
Desmosomes are cell-cell junctional structures found in the membrane of two adjacent cells. They are multiprotein complexes with cytoplasmic plaque proteins and transmembrane adhesion proteins which aid in the adhesion and junction of these cells. Desmosomes are critical for organizing and stabilizing the physical structure of an organism. They help cells maintain their integrity and resist the shear forces of contraction and stretching exerted on the body's tissues. Desmosomes also play a role in cell signaling and communication, allowing the transfer of molecules from one cell to another. Desmosomes have important roles in development and homeostasis of tissues. In addition, they are involved in the progression and metastasis of cancer. They are thus essential for normal functioning of the body.
