Defensins

Defensins are a family of small molecules found in humans and other organisms. These molecules are part of our innate immune system and play a significant role in protecting us from microbial and viral infections. They are antimicrobial peptides that are produced by most cells, including our skin and mucosal surfaces, and act by disrupting the cell membrane of pathogenic organisms. Defensins have been used to treat a variety of infections, both bacteria and virus-related, as well as reduce the toxicity of certain drugs. Additionally, research suggests that defensins can potentially be utilized to treat auto-immune diseases and cancer.
