Climbing Fibers
Climbing fibers are large, myelinated axons located in the Central Nervous System of vertebrates which extend from the brainstem to the cerebellum. These fibers are essential for establishing a normal balance of interactions between several cortical structures and the cerebellum. They play an important role in muscular coordination, motor learning, and sensory functions. Climbing fibers are also involved in the control of movements, including reaction time, speed of movement, and accuracy. Besides their role in controlling movement, climbing fibers are also important for cognitive functions such as attention, memory, and decision making.
