Overview

Fishes are aquatic animals with gills and fins, found in both freshwater and saltwater environments. They are an important part of marine and freshwater ecosystems, serving as both predators and prey as they feed off of other animals, such as plankton and small crustaceans, and are consumed by larger fish, birds, and mammals. In addition, they provide an important source of food for humans, both as a direct source of food and through the production of fisheries, providing essential nutrition for many around the world. As a result, the protection and conservation of fish populations are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and for providing food for humans, both now and in the future.
