Overview
Fisheries are the activities, resources, and industries concerned with catching, farming, and processing fish and other aquatic organisms for food, income, and other uses. They encompass both capture fisheries, which harvest wild populations from oceans, rivers, and lakes, and aquaculture, the controlled cultivation of aquatic species, and together they provide a major source of protein and livelihoods for billions of people worldwide. Sustaining fisheries requires balancing harvest with the capacity of populations to reproduce and recover, so the field addresses fish biology, reproduction, growth, feeding, and population dynamics alongside management measures intended to prevent overfishing, protect habitats, and maintain biodiversity. Environmental pressures, water quality, and human activity all influence the health and productivity of fish stocks. The International Journal of Aquaculture Research and Development publishes peer-reviewed work across these themes, including studies adopting a wider approach for fisheries management, examining obstacles to fish culture, evaluating feeds and growth performance in farmed species such as Nile tilapia and carp, and analyzing factors affecting Atlantic salmon populations. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to fisheries, fish biology, and aquaculture management.
