Overview

Aquaculture tanks are engineered containers used to raise aquatic organisms such as fish, shrimp, and other species under controlled conditions. They allow producers to manage water quality, temperature, oxygen levels, feeding, and stocking density, supporting the healthy growth of cultured species and offering an alternative to open-water systems such as ponds and cages. Tank-based systems are central to intensive and recirculating aquaculture, where careful control of the rearing environment improves productivity and helps protect both stock health and surrounding ecosystems. Research in the International Journal of Aquaculture Research and Development addresses the broader practices that tank and pond culture depend on, including the effects of fertilization on plankton density and the growth of carp, the use of plant-based feed ingredients for tilapia and other species, reproductive performance of cultured fish, dietary protein levels and growth, and obstacles facing fish culture. Together this work informs the management of feeding, water quality, and growth that underpins successful aquaculture in tanks and other systems. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to aquaculture tanks and to the wider study of aquaculture production and development.
