Overview

Diarrhea is a common condition characterized by frequent and loose stools. It is typically caused by gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines), infections, food poisoning, and certain medications. It is one of the most common illnesses affecting people of all ages and is responsible for more deaths among children in developing countries than any other disease. Proper hydration is critical to prevent dehydration and other complications caused by severe diarrhea. In addition, oral rehydration therapy (ORT) with electrolyte drinks and special foods can help to speed up the recovery process. Treatment is often necessary to reduce the duration and severity of diarrhea, as well as to reduce the risk of complications.
