Overview

Antibiotic therapy is the use of antibacterial agents to prevent or treat bacterial infection, selected on the basis of the likely or confirmed pathogen, the site and severity of infection, and local resistance patterns. It encompasses empirical therapy initiated before culture results, definitive therapy guided by susceptibility testing, and prophylaxis to prevent surgical and opportunistic infection. Rational use balances clinical efficacy against the promotion of antimicrobial resistance, adverse effects, and the disruption of host microbiota, making appropriate spectrum, dose, and duration central to good practice. The research themes reflected here span the restriction of antimicrobial usage in neonatal units, surgical-site infection management, and the treatment of dental and sinus infections. Diagnostic and resistance-focused work includes multiplex real-time PCR detection of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase genes in urinary tract infections and the genotypic diversity of Salmonella Typhi, while modelling studies examine typhoid transmission and intervention. Other studies address antibiotic treatment in veterinary reproductive medicine, immunomonitoring of infectious disease, and adjunctive antimicrobial approaches such as low-level laser therapy. Across these topics, stewardship, accurate pathogen identification, and resistance containment are recurring priorities. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical and laboratory studies, case reports, and reviews addressing antibacterial agents, their appropriate clinical application, and the diagnosis and control of bacterial infection.
