Sleep Medicine
Sleep medicine is a medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with sleep-related disorders. Disorders treated by sleep medicine doctors include difficulty sleeping, excessive daytime sleepiness, snoring, sleepwalking, insomnia, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. Treatment may involve lifestyle changes, such as avoiding caffeine and maintaining regular sleep and wake times, as well as various medications or medical devices, such as CPAP machines. Sleep medicine is important to overall health, as sleep deprivation can cause fatigue, reduce cognition and productivity, and increase the risk of other diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Therefore, treatments for sleep-related disorders can improve quality of life and reduce the risk of related conditions.
