Overview

Obstetrics is the branch of medicine that focuses on the care of women during pregnancy, labour and childbirth, as well as the postnatal period. Obstetric surgery is the surgical specialisation within obstetrics that deals with the medical and surgical management of pregnancy, labour and delivery, as well as any gynecological conditions that may arise during gestation or post-delivery. In some cases, obstetric surgery is recommended to reduce the risks associated with pregnancy and childbirth. These interventions may include cesarean sections, the removal of fibroids or other growths, tubal ligations, perineal repair and hysterectomies. Obstetric surgery is a crucial field of medical practice for promoting the safety of the mother and her unborn baby, and can be used to reduce the risk of potentially life-threatening complications such as preterm labour, maternal haemorrhage and shoulder dystocia.
