Overview
The antibody response is the adaptive humoral immune reaction in which exposure to an antigen drives the production of specific antibodies by B lymphocytes and their plasma cell progeny. It begins with antigen recognition and B-cell activation, generally with T-helper-cell cooperation, followed by clonal expansion, germinal-center reactions, class-switch recombination, and affinity maturation through somatic hypermutation. The primary response is dominated initially by IgM and later IgG, while a secondary response, mediated by memory B cells, is faster, of higher affinity, and of greater magnitude—the immunological basis of vaccination. Quantitative and qualitative measures, including antibody titer, seroconversion, neutralizing capacity, and immunoglobulin class, characterize the response and inform assessment of vaccine efficacy and seroprevalence. Antibody responses confer protection against viral and bacterial infection, can be probed serologically, and may be dysregulated in autoimmune syndromes. The research reflected here addresses immune responses to vaccination in calves and human cohorts, neutralizing antibodies in immune plasma, COVID-19 vaccine efficacy and post-vaccination seroprevalence, serological testing, and immunoassay methods such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The journal publishes peer-reviewed studies on humoral immunity, vaccine-induced antibody responses, and serological assessment across human and veterinary settings.
