Antimicrobial Agents
Antimicrobial agents are substances that can stop the growth of or destroy microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi and some viruses. They are used to treat or prevent infections and are often employed in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics and labs. Antimicrobial agents can be divided into two main types – bactericidal agents, which kill bacteria, and bacteriostatic agents, which stop bacteria from multiplying. They work by either disrupting the cell structure, inhibiting the production of essential molecules, or blocking the reproduction process. Antimicrobial agents are essential for the proper functioning of healthcare systems and can help to reduce the spread of infectious diseases. They can also be used in the food industry to help maintain hygiene, reduce spoilage and extend the shelf life of food products.
