Overview

The aging population, or population ageing, is the demographic shift toward a larger proportion of older adults within a population, driven by sustained increases in longevity together with declining fertility. This transition reshapes the epidemiology of disease and places distinctive demands on health and social-care systems, since older adults more often live with multimorbidity, frailty, and chronic non-communicable disease. Geriatric health priorities arising from this shift include nutritional status and the risk of undernutrition, the assessment of body composition and anthropometry when standing height is difficult to measure, musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis, the prevention of falls and their consequences for women and after trauma, the preservation of physical function and quality of life, and the provision of appropriate end-of-life care. Mental health, including depression in later life, frequently coexists with these physical conditions. Peer-reviewed research in this area examines diet and nutritional status of older adults in rural settings, arm-span as a surrogate for height in estimating body mass index, discharge disposition in older women after trauma, osteoarthritis in relation to falls and depression, quality of life among older persons living with non-communicable diseases, body composition in nonagenarians, and end-of-life care for the elderly. These strands connect demographic change to the clinical and functional priorities of geriatric medicine.
