Overview

Socio-economic status is a composite measure of an individual's or group's economic and social position, typically derived from income, wealth, education, occupation, and employment security. It is a powerful determinant of health, shaping exposure to risk, access to care, nutritional status, and health behaviours, and underlies persistent health inequalities and differential vulnerability to disease. Researchers use socio-economic indicators to identify disadvantaged populations, explain disparities in outcomes, and target interventions. The peer-reviewed research collected here examines socio-economic influences across diverse health domains, including the nutritional status of reproductive-age ethnic women in relation to socio-economic and nutritional factors, the socio-economic profile and nutritional status of urban rickshaw pullers and their energy-intake gap, socio-economic and demographic patterns of HIV occurrence, and determinants of cervical cancer screening uptake among refugee women. Further contributions address COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, socio-demographic factors in malaria-prevention uptake during pregnancy, abuse and neglect among climate-migrant elderly, and women's autonomy in household decision-making. Recurring themes include socio-economic determinants of nutrition, disparities in screening and disease occurrence, vulnerability among marginalized and displaced populations, and the influence of social position on health-seeking behaviour. Together these contributions frame socio-economic status as a fundamental social determinant of health, in which economic and educational circumstances structure access, behaviour, and outcomes, and whose measurement is essential to understanding and addressing health inequities.
