Overview

Arteries are the essential blood vessels which carry oxygen and nutrients to all the organs and tissues in our body. They have a muscular layer that helps regulate blood pressure and flow. Hypertension or high blood pressure is a chronic condition where the blood pressure in the arteries is elevated. It is a leading cause of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Hypertension is caused by various factors such as genetic predisposition, unhealthy lifestyle, and underlying medical conditions like diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and sleep apnea. The symptoms of high blood pressure are often subtle and can go unnoticed for a long time. Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study, diagnosis, and treatment of heart disorders. Hypertension is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases that cardiologists encounter. The diagnosis of hypertension is made by measuring blood pressure with a sphygmomanometer. Lifestyle modifications, such as regular exercise, healthy eating habits, weight management, and stress reduction, are the cornerstone of hypertension management. Early detection and treatment of hypertension can help prevent complications and improve quality of life for hypertensive patients. Cardiologists use various medications to treat hypertension, including diuretics, ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and angiotensin receptor blockers. In severe cases, surgery may be required to treat hypertension. In conclusion, hypertension is a significant risk factor for heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases. If you have high blood pressure, it is crucial to work with your doctor to manage your condition and prevent any further complications.
