Overview

Occupational and environmental medicine is a scientific field of study that focuses on the interactions between people and their working environments. Researchers in this field study the effects of workplace hazards on human health, as well as the identification and prevention of environmental health hazards. Occupational and environmental medicine is particularly concerned with the prevention of workplace accidents, injuries, and illnesses. This field of research examines the physical, chemical, and biological exposures that workers encounter and works to find ways to reduce or eliminate these hazards. Additionally, occupational and environmental medicine investigates the health effects of pollution and other forms of environmental toxic exposure. Researchers in this field work to identify the hazards posed by a variety of environmental contaminants and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
